MINUTES OF STUDENT COUNCIL MEETING
UK-LF1 ENGLISH PARALLEL
Thursday 15th October 2009, 17.00, Physiology Department.

1. Apologies & Attendance.
Present: Lizzie Kershaw, Sita Kotecha, Sangeeta Ravi-Shankar, Najdin Kapo, Nadav Levinget (new member), Muhammad Amierrul Hafis Sin Tantawi, Ioannis Kapagiannidis, Thanos Stefanis (new member), Rhiannon Killingbeck, Sadesh Balasingam, Tracey Slade & Khyzer Chaudhary.

2. Year Issues:
First Year:
• Feedback from first year registration was that it took too long to complete the process
• First year students would like to be issued with a certificate confirming their studies at the University in order to comply with foreign police matters etc, instead of having to go to student affairs later and request it in person
• Since starting studies more guidance is needed with regards to what was expected for study/exams/lecture notes etc. Sadesh reported that a group of second year students had been putting together useful information regarding studies/lectures/handouts/exam questions etc which would be useful for first year students.
• Many first year students did not receive the handbook published by student council despite it being sent by email.
• Group email accounts to be used to send out student handbook again. Professors also need to be informed of the group email accounts so they can also use them to pass on important information.
• Nadav reported that too many people were attending physical education at once. Football was very oversubscribed (2/3 of the class are only allowed to watch) and the gym was overcrowded. As first and second years attend at the same time, it was suggested some timetable alterations were required. This matter to be reported to Professor Kittnar.
Second Year:
• Najdin reported problems with the University Doctor again. There were issues with regards to obtaining appointments (apparently he is on holiday for half of October), requiring full health checks again, and inconsistency regarding health check requirements and charges. Tracey & Lizzie agreed that this matter needs to be clarified in writing and the matter will be discussed with Professor Kittnar.
Third Year: Nothing to report
Fourth Year:
• Sita reported problems with the new clinical anatomy course, concerns that are shared with the teachers. There have been both time and study constraints having this subject at the start of the academic year and at the same time as neurology. Whilst it is agreed the subject is useful, it was felt students were not able to obtain the most benefit from the course. It was suggested that the course be carried out at alternative time in the schedule. One suggestion was during the surgery block as there is no exam in this rotation. To be discussed with Professor Kittnar.
Fifth Year: Nothing to Report
Sixth Year: No representative able to attend.
Dentists:
• Iannis reported that there were few eligible subjects dentistry students were able to attend, particularly dental materials which is specific for dentists and clashes with their fixed schedule. It was suggested dentists communicate with the relevant teachers to ask if alternative arrangements can be made.

Social:
Lizzie thanked Rhiannon and Sadesh on behalf of student council for all their hard work in organising the welcome meal for the first year students and the welcome party, both of which were very successful.
Rhiannon also informed student council of two forthcoming events. A pub quiz at red room on the 28th October – teams (min 4) with prizes 22kc a beer, 50kc/person entry, details to be forwarded via facebook.
Christmas party to be held on Friday December 11th, details to follow.

Hoodies:
Still ongoing. Orders now need to be placed. Following discussion, it was concluded that (as long as the office agrees) students should place orders and payment at student affairs/cash office and once enough orders have been made the hoodies should be created. Lizzie to confirm and make arrangements with student affairs for this to take place.

Any other business:

UNIVERSITY 'CHECK - OUT'

Dear all, I recently visited the office to enquire about what we needed to do upon completion of our studies to get the diploma. After finishing the final state exam, you have to go to the office with your index. The secretaries will check your SIS is up to date (so ensure it is) as well as your index and then give you a form of 'things to do' with boxes for signatures. These include the following:

1. Medical check up - this can be done at any GP in Prague. Dr Mrastik wants a TB test (250kc), Hepatitis Ab (234kc) and a physical check up (700kc)
prior to signing the form. However, it seems you can go to other doctors and they will not ask you for the blood examinations - the choice is yours. It appears only the physical check up is mandatory.

2. Faculty library check and stamp - to ensure you do not have any outstanding books from the library. Just go to the library with the form.

3. ISIC card return - upon ending your life as a Charles University student you must return the ISIC card to the secretaries.

Once all the above is completed the secretaries will call the company who create the diplomas and it will be prepared. During the time period when the diploma is being prepared (apparently takes 2 weeks) the secretaries said they will provide us with an unofficial document confirming we have finished for those who need proof of completion of studies - it should have your diploma number on it which is the key (i.e. those going to the UK may use this for GMC registration).

For those who will not be attending the graduation, they must organise to sign the Hippocratic oath at the Rector's office (Carolium Builiding where we had immatriculation) before receiving their diploma. This should be organised after all the above has been completed. The Rector's office is only open of Wednesday afternoons for some reason. For further enquiries please speak to the secretaries.
